After breakfast our driver will pick us up for a tour of the Barranco Artsy district, with stops at various art galleries. The Barranco district is known as the SoHo of Lima, Peru. There are plenty of things to do in Barranco; it is full of renowned art galleries, cute boutiques and trendy coffee shops that were once colonial mansions of Lima’s elite. Anywhere you turn, you’ll see art on the street, live music and killer bars. The Barranco neighbourhood also happens to be situated along the coastal cliffs overlooking the Pacific Ocean, right next to Miraflores, making it the prime spot to view Lima’s spectacular sunsets. The hippest shops can be found in Barranco. Vernacula, located a few steps away from the Bridge of Sighs, is an old colonial mansion converted into an art gallery, design store and clothing shop. Some of Lima’s best independent designers have their clothing, shoes and accessories up for sale there. You can also enjoy a cup of coffee or delicious ice cream dessert in their cafe, located on the lower level. Early afternoon our driver will take you to the Larco Museum where you can enjoy lunch at the Café del Museo Restaurant, in the gardens of the Museum (lunch not included in pricing). Morning: Your guide will pick you up at your hotel (with your luggage) for a half-day tour of Lima. There will be a quick stop for lunch before heading to the airport for your transfer to the Amazon rain forest. Lunch not included in pricing. On arrival into Puerto Maldonado, you are welcomed and assisted by the lodge staff. Check-in, and within 15 minutes you can get to the boarding wharf. Begin to experience the enchantment of the rainforest as you take a 45-minute boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge. The lodge is located on the banks of Peru’s Madre de Dios River, in the heart of a 40-square-mile private ecological reserve deep in the Amazon rainforest. All 34 of the jungle camp’s thatched cabañas are illuminated by lantern light, the beds shrouded in clouds of muslin. Cozy hammocks swing on porches. The sounds of the jungle act as an evening lullaby. After breakfast experience the enchantment of the rain forest as you take a 1-hour boat ride along the Madre de Dios River, to arrive at Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica Lodge. You can choose from the 14 different excursions available. We recommend a guided walk along the Trail system, into the Inkaterra Reserva Amazonica natural area, where you will discover the Amazon Basin. This trail offers an excellent introduction to the forest environment, winding past impressive trees such as the Shihuahuaco, and the strangely beautiful strangler fig, offering excellent opportunities for bird watching and observing exotic insects. We also recommend on the first night our Twilight River excursion — a guided afternoon boat ride on the Madre de Dios river. Witness the transformation from a diurnal to a nocturnal world: animals and birds of the daytime give way to species specially adapted to the night. As you enjoy their paradise, you will learn about their habits, while you search for nightjars, owls, capybaras and up to three different caiman species. AMAZON RAINFOREST Enjoy a trip to Gamitana Creek, located 25 minutes by boat. For one and a half hours, explore the rainforest along the banks of a winding, dark-water creek that is home to many piranha, caiman, turtles and birds, until the Sanipanga landing point. Navigate your way back downstream, appreciating the abundant flora and fauna along the way. You will return to Gamitana Farm to do a short guided tour to see how local farmers raise fruits and vegetables. Return to the lodge for lunch. After lunch, enjoy the Hacienda Concepcion excursion, with over 200 different plant species, and learn about the uses and benefits of traditional topical flora. This is followed by a 30-minute canoe trip to look for turtles, sun grebes, nightjars and exotic herons. Then consider the Rainforest by Night excursion for an approximately 2-hour. Biological activity differs greatly between night and day in the Amazonian ecosystem. Venture into the forest and experience the mystery of the animal activity that awakens in the rainforest after dark, enhancing animal resources to create new adaptation mechanisms. Rest in bed or rise early — the choice is yours. Breakfast begins at 5:30 a.m., for those who want to avoid the heat, and enjoy nature at its fullest. A full buffet breakfast is served from 5:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. This morning you may visit the Lake Sandoval excursion into the Tambopata National Reserve. Glide in a wooden canoe, across a beautiful, mirror-like oxbow lake that is home to the endangered giant river otter, as well as red howler monkeys, red-bellied macaws, anacondas, side-neck turtles and black caimans. You leave for the airport at 10:00 A.M. for a 1:35 PM flight. Arrive in Cusco at 2:30 PM. Upon arrival; there is a private transfer directly to the Sacred Valley. Today you will visit the Pisac market. There will be time to visit either the ruins of Ollataytambo or the Salt Flats at Moras. The town of Pisac is renowned for its colorful market where the local Indians meet to sell their merchandise as they have done for centuries. The handicraft market is open every day and is famous for its ceramic beads made into necklaces, earrings and other Peruvian artifacts We will share a picnic lunch in the countryside. This morning transfer to the rail station in Ollanta to board the train to Machu Picchu. The train journey to Machu Picchu is a highlight of any trip to the Andes. The scenery is simply spectacular, and the recently refurbished Vistadome Trains with their panoramic windows allow you to enjoy it in comfort. The train will stop at KM 104 and this is where you’ll begin to walk. After crossing the bridge over the turbulent Vilcanota River, you’ll find Chachabamba Inka remains and take the Inka Trail. Climbing the mountain you will see many different types of orchids and colorful birds and enjoy the impressive change of vegetation on the surrounding mountains. A box lunch picnic will take place on top of the mountain where Winayhuayna, an archaeological site that you’ll later explore, first comes into view. After lunch, enter the high jungle above the river. Once you reach the Sun Gate, you shall have your foremost sight of Machu Picchu then stroll down the Royal road and finally enter to the Lost City of the Incas. Later in the afternoon, descend to your hotel in the town of Aguas Calientes. For those who do no wish to hike the 8 hour trail we can arrange a train transfer to Machu Picchu for you. For a truly mystical experience, we suggest early rises might want to also hike the Huayna Picchu Peak, situated opposite the fortress, where you gain panoramic views of the imposing site and the Urubamba Valley. Huayna Picchu rises over Machu Picchu. The Incas built a trail up the side of the Huayna Picchu and built temples and terraces on its top. The peak of Huayna Picchu is about 2,670 meters (8,757 ft) above sea level, or about 243 meters (797 ft) higher than Machu Picchu. The climb takes about 3 hours, including time for pictures and relaxing. The 260-meter hike uphill takes approximately 1:30 hours and coming downhill is about 1 hour. According to local guides, the top of the mountain was the residence for the high priest and the local virgins. Every morning before sunrise, the high priest with a small group would walk to Machu Picchu to signal the coming of the new day. The Temple of the Moon, one of the three major temples in the Machu Picchu area, is nestled on the side of the mountain and is situated at an elevation lower than Machu Picchu. Adjacent to the Temple of the Moon is the Great Cavern, another sacred temple with fine masonry. Or return to Machu Picchu in the morning for explore Machu Picchu with your private guide who will assist you to pay the round trip bus ticket and admission fee locally, and will privately accompany you back to Machu Picchu.
